I was absent mindedly reading the outside of the wheatbrick box as I was putting it away and there were suggestions as to how to serve. One of them was adding bananas and my mind raced from there.

This fun food, breakfast nest has got to be one of the simplest ever!

– 2 Wheatbricks

– 1 banana


1. I sliced the wheatbrick and then cut into smaller bits to build the outside of the nest. All the crumble went in the centre.

2. Then I added an extra layer.

3. Before cutting some banana pieces into rough egg shapes.

Fun Soccer Berries

Soccer Berries

This is a bit of a summery design and for those of us in mid-winter it will probably mean resorting to frozen berries!

However, it’s a cute, simple, fun food soccer/football plate.

– Blueberries (could use other small berries)

– Strawberry (or other brightly coloured fruit) for the ball

– I used kiwi fruit and pepitas for the grass

– I used sunflower seeds and yoghurt for the net


1. Place two berry heads on the plate.

2. Then add the body of the goalie.

3. And the striker.

4. I used a strawberry to make the ball.

Back to World Cup fever! My boys were totally mesmerised by this dish.

A fun food soccer pitch that is healthy, delicious and simple to create.

Soccer Pitch from veggies


– Pea & broccoli puree (steam veggies, add a splash of stock and herbs – blend!)

– Mashed potato


1. I used the only rectangular platter I have which is a little too thin to give the shape of a proper soccer pitch but best I could do!
I spread the pea & broccoli puree as smoothly as possible to make the grass.

2. I added quite a bit of milk to the cooked mash then piped it out of a plastic bag using a small knife to guide into position. Starting by making lines around the sides and across the centre.

3. I used mash again to create the goal and penalty area.

4. And finished by adding the circles and penalty spots.

Fun Tic Tac Toe Oats

Winter is well and truly here for us so some nice warm oats in the morning is a great way to fill the belly and heat the body from the inside. Throw in some fruit and it’s delicious.

Here’s my simple, fun food Tic Tac Toe (Noughts and Crosses).

1. Make a square from the oats.

3. Add the horizontal lines.

4. I used strawberries to make the noughts and crosses.

6. But then wondered if yoghurt crosses gave a better contrast.

Fun Soccer Net

The World Cup continues so there are a few more fun food plates to do too.

Here’s a simple, fun, soccer snack that my boys loved.

– Banana

– Black grapes

– Yoghurt (or coconut cream)


1. Make some goalposts from banana.

2. Then add the sides.

3. And make the net from yoghurt (I used a small knife to create the lines).

4. Use the knife again to do the sides.

5. Drag the knife downwards through the yoghurt to finish the netting.

6. Cut a slice of banana to make the ball and add detail using black grapes.

7. Slice the banana into strips and carve out the letters for World Cup.

This was pure indulgence. I saw the logo, loved the vibrant colours but knew it would be impossible to reproduce in food. Still there is nothing like a challenge to spur one on …

Here’s my fun food version of the World Cup Logo.

– Grated carrot and sweetcorn (I mixed with a little home-made mayo to help it stay together and taste amazing).

– Baby Spinach

– Red Capsicum (bell pepper)


1. I made the hand shape from the carrot/corn mix.

2. Then used scissors to cut the baby spinach and make the detail down the bottom.

3. More baby spinach made the fingers arching over the top left.

4. I added the numbers from red capsicum.

5. Then the curving spinach fingers on the right.

6. And the printed words as that was just a step too far in food …

Fun Soccer Pancake

World Cup fever strikes and I just had to do a topical fun food plate.

Pancakes are a huge treat in our house and married with blueberries (ones I froze in the summer) and yoghurt it’s a winning combination!!

– Pancake

– Blueberries (I had to use frozen as it’s winter!!)

– Yoghurt (I used home-made Greek). Ricotta or cottage cheese would work as would coconut cream.


1. Make a pancake. Fortunately most frying pans are round!

2. I made a template of the hexagon and pentagon.

3. Then scored around them with a knife.

4. I filled in the central pentagon with berries.

5. And used more to cover all the partial pentagons round the edge.

6. Then began to fill the hexagons with yoghurt.

7. Scoring a line between each one with the knife.

– Pear

– Red Apple

– Mandarin

– Raisin

– Pepitas


1.Cut a handle from pear.

2.Then slice some flesh of the pear thinly for the rod.

3.And extend it back into the handle.

4.I made a reel from apple.

5.Then added fishing wire from very thinly cut apple.

6.And used the outside of the apple to make the detail on the rod.

7.Fortunately today it did not get away so the mandarin fish is caught!

So Father’s Day is looming on some parts of the planet so I thought I’d do a blokey design. It felt a little stereotypical to do tools and then I thought about how excited my husband gets about a trip to the hardware store and how many new toys he must have once there ….

Here are my fun food, fruit tools to surprise Dad with on Sunday.

1. Cut the handle of the screwdriver from the cheek of the apple.

2. Add the blade of the screwdriver from the flesh of the apple.

3. Carve the head of the hammer from a pear.

4. Then the handle from a banana.

5. I added some pear to cover the join in the banana.

6. Before using more apple to make the head of the wrench.

7. The handle was from the flesh of the apple.

Fun Salad Bulldozer

A bright yellow capsicum (bell pepper) just screamed construction vehicle to me.

So here is my fun food bulldozer.

– Yellow capsicum (bell pepper)

– Cherry tomato

– Celery

– Cucumber


1. Cut a cab shape from the cheek of the capsicum.

2. Then carve out a window.

3. I sliced the body at an angle to make the caterpillar tracks look lopsided!

4. Before adding another slice of capsicum (inner side out) for the tracks. Tomatoes cut in half made the wheels.

5. Then I added celery cut into “curls” for the tracks and added a scoop to the front from more capsicum.

6. I used chunks of cucumber for the load and the road.

7. A few celery details and we’re ready to work!

Fun Toast Ute

I admit that I find it very difficult to look at round veggies and not think of wheels! This time I gave in to the obsession and created a simple toast truck. It’d be just as good untoasted too!!

– Mushrooms (lightly cooked whole – or can leave raw!!)

– Wholegrain bread

– Cheese for the windows (I used Edam)

– Tomato for brakelight (optional)

– I separated an egg and used for headlight and load

– Spinach for the road


1. I lined up the mushrooms for wheels.

2. Then put the toast over the top so I could figure out where to cut the wheel arches.

3. And then cut the semi-circles out.

4. Before cutting a rough body shape for the truck.

5. Then used cheese to make some windows.

6. I sliced a little from a tomato to make the brake light.

7. And utilised the cooked egg yolk for the headlight and added a cheese door handle.

8. The white of the egg was used for the load.

Fun Pear Raccoon

I had some lovely black grapes I wanted to use in a design and raccoons with their iconic bandit faces and stripey tails just jumped out at me (and way easier than zebra!!).

Here’s my fun food raccoon using just pear and grapes.

1. Cut a head shape from the pear.

2. Before adding ears and snout.

3. Then I used the cheek from the pear to make the body as it was the perfect shape. Just sliced out some legs and cut an indent for the head!

4. And of course he needed a big, fluffy, pear tail too.

5. Next I gave him the bandit mask, cut from a grape.

6. More grapes for paws and nose.

7. Then the stripes for the tail and detail on the ears.

8. Adding pupils to the eyes with both pear and grape.

9. Instead of a garbage can I was kind and gave him a pear rock … and crescent moon.

Fun Corn Bee

With the last of this season’s corn I decided to make a special plate for Joe who loves corn and loves olives. He was so pleased with his fun food plate!

– Fresh cooked corn

– Olives

– Celery


1. Cut the corn into slices for the body.

2. Then cut a slice into a head shape.

3. Before adding the black olive stripes and stinger.

4. I cut discs from celery for the eyes.

5. And used more celery for the antennae (which I balanced against the body so they stand upright).

6. Then I used olives to make pupils for the eyes and a nice smile.

7. I pulled corn off the cob to use as the outline for the wings.
