My boys rarely have sandwiches for lunch but if they do why not make them fun too!

Lunchbox Faces, fun food that’s quick and simple.

– Sandwich

– Olives

– Cheese,

– Red capsicum (bell pepper)

You can of course just use any ingredients you have on hand!


1. Use cup case holders to keep everything together and bite-sized.

2. I used a cookie cutter to make them round.

3. Then added a face from cheese, olive and red capsicum.

4. And gave the next sandwich a different expression.

Fun Carrot Cottage

I love combining a whole host of salad veggies to make a picture. Even though we’re in mid-winter it was a glorious, blue sky day when I made this and so I was dreaming of summer …

Here’s a lovely, fun food Carrot Cottage.           Fun food art Carrot House

1. Build the cottage from carrot.

2. Then the outline of the roof.

3. Use semi circles for the tiles.

4. Then the inside of a radish (or daikon) for the door and window.

5. Attach a chimney to the side of the roof.

6. Before planting celery and cucumber trees.

7. Little slices of cucumber form the grass.

Fun Dinosaur Egg

Not sure whether it was the semi-peeled avocado or the fact that we watched Jurassic World that got me thinking of hatching dinosaurs!

Here’s my fun food Dinosaur Egg.

– Cabbage

– Carrot

– Avocado

– Celery

– Radish (or cucumber)

– Olive


1. Arrange thin strips of cabbage to start the nest.

2. Add slices of carrot (I used a potato peeler).

3. Half peel an avocado and place in the nest.

4. Add some circles cut from radish for eyes.

5. Give him some celery hands.

6. Use carrot for a tail and spikes.

Fun Mandarin Octopus

The fruit was talking to me again and seeing the mandarin peeled just made me think of an octopus.

So … here’s a simple, fun food Mandarin Octopus.

– Pear

– Blueberries or raisins

– Kiwi fruit

– Almonds


1. Peel a mandarin.

2. Slice the pear lengthways to yield “arms” and arrange around the mandarin.

3. Stick on blueberry eyes – I used a little yoghurt.

4. Chop kiwi fruit up for the seabed.

Still on a bit of a lunchbox roll … These are a lovely, bright, simple and healthy addition to a fun food lunch. Not to mention versatile as you can throw in whatever you fancy …

I used some silicon cup cases from the discount store. If you are worried about transporting you can always pack some cardboard on top to hold in place once lid is on.

I know we all struggle with lunchboxes. They are relentless. Every weekday morning there they are again empty and waiting to be filled with inspiration. And, unfortunately time and ideas are not at a premium first thing!

I thought I’d do a series of super simple and fun lunchbox ideas. Yes they may take an extra minute or two to make but having what you put in appreciated and eaten is often worth the additional effort.

And here are some I prepared earlier!! Knowing I’d like to blog a plate for all my US friends on 4th July I was far more sensible this year and actually put something together when all the summer Northern Hemisphere fruits were in season down here.

Here are my fun food 4th July Skewers, perfect for a party or a dessert.

1. Cut cubes of watermelon and use them to create the “4”.
