Fun Toast Truck

Toast Truck

I am always looking for really simple designs so I can whip up a unique meal in minutes. This was one that grew out of lovely ripe cherry tomatoes that looked so lovely and wheel-like!

Fun food, simple and very quick.

Fun food for kids

Recipe

– 2 pieces of bread

– 2 cherry or small tomatoes

– Cheese – for the window

– Egg yolk for the sun

– Baby spinach leaves (for the birds)

Method

1. Slice the bread for the back of the truck using the longest side.

2. Then use another slice for the cab (it doesn’t quite fit into one slice of our bakery bread – they need bigger loaves!).

Toast Truck - 2 Cab

3. Cut arches for the wheels.

Toast Truck - 3 wheel arches

4. Slice two tomatoes in half to form the wheels.

Toast Truck - 4 wheels

5. Then add a cheese window and an exhaust pipe from the bread.

Toast Truck - 5 window

6. I cut some more of the bread to make the road.

Toast Truck - 6 road

7. Then cooked an egg yolk to make the sun (the cheats way is prick the yolk and cook for 5-10 secs in the microwave).

Toast Truck - 7 sun

8. And as I buy big eggs there was enough yolk left over to make the sun shine.

9. I always want more greenery in my meals and spinach is a great one to use. I am not sure this works though.

10. Although I did like the spinach birds.

11. So I decided to banish the leaves and keep the birds!

Fun – Winter Brekkie Tree

Winter Brekkie Tree

So as there are only 4 seasons this would be the last in my series of breakfast trees and as there is a storm raging outside my window it is very appropriate today ….

Fun Avocado Mouse

Avocado Mouse

Avocadoes are not in season – boo hoo – but I got a few lovely looking ones and when I scooped one out of its skin I saw a mouse. Not a real one in my kitchen (which is a good thing) but the shape, hidden in the half avocado.

Here is a lovely, fun food, simple breakfast or snack idea. Avocadoes are a great source of good oil and delicious to boot.

Healthy breakfast

Recipe

– Half a ripe avocado

– 1 cherry tomato

– Cheese

– Toast – I used wholemeal

– Baby spinach leaves for decoration

– I used a blob of cottage cheese for the pupil (cream cheese/yoghurt or hard cheese would be fine).

Method

1. Cut the avocado in half and scoop it carefully out of its skin and place on a piece of toast.

Avocado Mouse - 1 avocado

2. I used a tomato cut in half for the eyes.

Avocado Mouse - 2 + eyes

3. Then cut some big ears from some cheese.

On top of some slices of olives.

6. I placed spinach leaves around and gifted her a “block” of cheese of her own.

Healthy breakfast food

7. And there we have our breakfast mouse.

But I wasn’t sure whether the olives made her a little scary …

Fun Pancake House

Pancake House

I made some crepes (a thinner version of pancakes) and steamed some apples at the same time to make a sweet but not sugary accompaniment.

Max was fascinated by the tree and it was the first thing he dived for. A fun food breakfast or snack idea.

Healthy breakfast

Recipe

– Apple

– Crepes (I make them with wholemeal flour, eggs and milk)

– I used yoghurt for the moon and chimney smoke

Method

1. I cooked the crepes then used a giant house cookie cutter.

2. But as usual I was under whelmed by the outcome so started adding and chopping bits. I started with windows and door.

Pancake House - 2 Windows & Doors

I also cut the right hand side of the top of the house off at an angle.

3. Then added another peak to the roof.

Pancake House - 3 Additional roof

4. As we were getting bigger and fancier chimneys seemed in order.

Pancake House - 4 Chimneys & window detail

And I put some cross pieces into the window.

5. I used the steamed apple to make the ground and a tree.

Pancake House - 5 Tree and wall

6. And some bushes and a path.

Pancake House - 6 Path & bushes

7. I used some home-made Greek style yoghurt to make a moon as it seemed like a night scene.

Fun Brekkie Space Shuttle

Brekkie Space Shuttle

I was planning on creating a rocket but then as I began it morphed into a space shuttle.

I have lovely memories of a really fun trip to Cape Canaveral I made with two friends of mine Jamey and Shawn many, many moons ago when we were lucky enough to see a shuttle housed in its giant hangar.

Healthy breakfast ideas

This is really no more complicated than many of my other fun food breakfast designs although it may seem at first glance to be a little intimidating.
For me it was all worth it as the boys were wide-eyed with pleasure when I showed them.

Recipe

– 4 Wheat bricks (one is only partially used)

– Yoghurt – I used home-made Greek style

– Raisins/Dates – for detail

– Coconut for sky

Method

1. Place one wheat-brick for the base of the shuttle and then carefully cut another for the cone at the top (they cut surprisingly well with a sharp knife).

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 1 bricks

2. Then cut a wheat-brick in half to make the wings.

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 2 wings

3. Cover with yoghurt.

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 3 yoghurt

4. Add a front window. I used chopped raisins.

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 4 Window

5. Then I used a knife to score some detail into the yoghurt.

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 5 Lines

And cut some dates for the base of the shuttle.

6. Added some detail on the wings with raisins and a date nose cone.

Brekkie Space Shuttle - 6 Detail

7. Coconut makes a great starry sky.

8. Then I made a couple of yoghurt stars.

9. And for the final flourish a tail.
