Merry Christmas and I hope everyone is having a great day surrounded by family, friends and lots of hearty food.

We’re having a lovely time celebrating with our nearest and dearest and I’ve prepared two fun food plates to share. One for the cool, Northern hemisphere where root veggies are king and one for our Southern hemisphere where temps could be upwards of 40 degrees and salads are infinitely preferable!

Fun Strawberry Christmas Tree

Strawberry Christmas Tree

I’ve gone a bit mad with Christmas trees this year but they really are such an easy thing to design and lovely and flexible. Admittedly I attempted a 3-D version first that looked great at the start but wasn’t half as structurally sound as I would have liked ….!

This is my bright, fun food plate that’s perfect for a shared plate or dessert.

Christmas fun food

Recipe

– Strawberries

– I used plum, papaya, blueberries, green apple, kiwi fruit, yoghurt and coconut. But any bright fruit you have on hand will make the tree light up!

Method
1. Cut the strawberries in half (you may need to slice some of the extra bulk from the larger end too). Use them to build the tree.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 1 Top (1 of 1)

2. Keep adding to make the shape of the tree. This seems to work almost organically due to their shape.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 2 layers (1 of 1)

3. Layer the strawberries until you have the triangular shape completed. You may have to push them in from the side to fill the small gaps.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 3 tree (1 of 1)

4. I used a cookie cutter to make a papaya star.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 4 star (1 of 1)

5. Then I cut a plum to make the base of the tree.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 5 base (1 of 1)

6. And added some papaya and blueberry baubles.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 6 baubles (1 of 1)

7. To make the tinsel I used a potato peeler to slice off some green apple skin.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 7 tinsel (1 of 1)

Then sliced some kiwi fruit triangles for more colour.

8. And no tree is complete without presents at the base. I used apple initially but then changed them to the inside of the strawberries later.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 8 presents (1 of 1)

9. I added blobs of yoghurt to make lights.

Strawberry Christmas Tree - 9 lights (1 of 1)

10. Then sprinkled desiccated coconut for snow.

Healthy Christmas party food

11. And realised the presents were not dark enough so swapped them over.

Fun Christmas Rudolph Pies

Christmas Rudolph Pies

My lentil and meat pies are always a huge treat for the boys so when combined with the Rudolph factor they are a complete winner. I have used my healthy pastry recipe (wholemeal flour/wholegrain oats/water) and the pies themselves are stuffed with veggies and lentils which makes them tasty and nutritious.

I have used basic additions to make these into fun food for Christmas. Skipping the pastry and just using a bowl with any filling and then putting on the face and antlers would work well too and be even more super quick and easy.

Fun Christmas Bells

Fun Christmas Bells

I’m always looking for new ways to serve food and as we’re in the middle of moving (ahhh) I am more time poor than usual. Dishes like Bubble and Squeak tick my boxes as I can throw whatever veggies I have in with some mashed potato, roast in the oven and voila a simple meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner packed with nutrients.

I am not usually happy with the outcome of molds – but this time they worked a treat.

Check out my very simple, fun food bells.

Christmas meals for kids

Recipe

– Bubble and Squeak

– Flat leaf spinach

– Cherry tomato

Method

1. Push the B & S into the mold.

Christmas Bells - 1 Bell (1 of 1)

4. Then I cut some of the spinach leaves to make bows (I used my kitchen scissors).
