Fun Watermelon Train

Watermelon Train

This has got to be one of my favourite fun food, party centrepieces. I have made many watermelon trains and am still rapt by the enthusiasm by which they are received. This is one I made for Joe’s break-up party at his first Kinder.

Cute party ideas train

These trains are really quite simple to put together and are a great way to get everyone tucking into fruit instead of cake. They are also flexible as aside from the watermelon you can use whichever other fruits are seasonal.

Joe had a family picnic day at his school so I wanted to take a communal dessert and the train seemed the obvious choice, although even I was surprised at how quickly it got demolished. I blinked and there was not a “crumb” left!

– Watermelon (it doesn’t actually take that much. ¼ of a medium sized one is plenty but you can’t use the pre-cut elongated triangular shaped pieces, it must be cut flat)

– I used kiwi fruit for the wheels (any medium sized, circular fruit would work stone fruit, oranges)

– I used pear for the steam dome and cow catcher

– Banana for the funnel (apple, pear, melon also are good)

– I stuffed the carriages with cut plum, pear, blueberries and apricots

– I used blueberries for the carriage dividers (raisins are good too)

1. Cut the front of the train.
